Geographical Location

Together with the districts Veddel, Steinwerder and Small Grasbrookhafen is the area of William Castle between the two major Elbarmen Norderelbe and Southern Elbe - Köhlbrand in the Hamburg area. These districts form several Elbe islands, Veddel and William Castle are diked separately. At William Castle also includes the Elbinsel Hohe Schaar ( this corresponds approximately to the " lower jaw " when you compare the entire island area with the outer head shape an upward -looking turtle). The overall structure between Norder and Southern Elbe is often regarded as a great island - the reason for this lies in the fact that the transitions between the individual islands are much more difficult to identify than the crossing of the two broad river arms. In addition, the southern area (ie the area Wilhelm castle without the Hohe Schaar ) existed in earlier times of much more individual islands that are already summarized as Elbinsel William Castle. For the term " Elbinsel William Castle " so there's more than one definition, depending on which sub-regions or islands be included.

The often -to-read assertion William Castle is the largest river island in Europe and the largest inhabited river island in Europe is wrong. There are, for example, in the Danube numerous larger and partly inhabited river islands, such as the Great Rye Island ( Žitný ostrov ) in Slovakia, with an area of 1885.19 km ² and a population of about 72,000 about 50 times as large as William Burg. However, William Castle is the largest river island and also the largest inland island in Germany.

At the current splitting field, so to Norder and Southern Elbe or Köhlbrand, boundaries: in the north of the city center, and the districts of Altona, St. Pauli, Neustadt, Old Town, Klostertor (Harbor City) and Rothenburgsort; in the east, the four-and marshlands in the district Bergedorf; in the southern district of Harburg with new territory, Harburg himself, the Harburg sea and inland ports in home field and in the West Moor Castle with harbor areas Altenwerder and Waltershof. It is noteworthy that the districts Steinwerder and Small Grasbrookhafen account for about 90 % of the Hamburg free port area - port of Hamburg is therefore congruent to a large extent with the Wilhelmsburger harbor.

The area between Norder and Southern Elbe / Köhlbrand comprises about seven times seven kilometers, ie about 50 square kilometers, the size of the official City of Wilhemsburg is about 35 square kilometers. The longest distance from the crotch of the same in the southeast Wilhelmsburg ( ferrous house cusp ), to Köhlbrandhöft in the northwest, is about 13 km (all figures crow flies).

History

On September 4, 1672 acquired Georg Wilhelm of Brunswick- Lüneburg- Celle three large Elbe islands that have been diked it out and united by connecting dikes. They wore henceforth the name of William Castle. The longest and one of the main streets of Wilhelmsburg remembers today as Georg- Wilhelm-Straße to the founder.

As a result of the annexation of the Lower Elbe region by France William Castle was 1811-1814 a canton of the Office of the Elbe estuary Hambourg departments, then again part of the Kingdom of Hanover, which was after 1866 Prussian province.

This was in 1927 united with the neighboring urban district of Harburg under Mayor Walter Dudek to the town Kreis Harburg Castle Wilhelm, who had about 110,000 inhabitants, and thus was the big city. Through the Greater Hamburg Act Harburg Wilhelm castle was in the " land of Hamburg " incorporated with effect from April 1, 1937, during the period of the Third Reich, along with other communities of Prussia and both lost their independence in 1938.
