William M. Daley

William Michael "Bill" Daley ( born August 8, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois) is an American businessman and politician (Democratic Party), who belonged to the cabinet of President Bill Clinton as Trade Minister ( Secretary of Commerce ) and the Cabinet Obama of 2011-2012 served as chief of Staff of the White House.

Life

Daley is the seventh and youngest child of Richard J. Daley, the longtime mayor of Chicago. His brother Richard held that post from 1989 to 2011. Daley received his bachelor's degree at Loyola University in Chicago; it was followed by the Bachelor of Laws degree from the John Marshall Law School, which later also awarded him the honorary Juris Doctor. As a lawyer, he was for many years self-employed; 1977-1980 he was a member of an advisory committee to the government on economic issues.

Later he got into the banking industry, was appointed Deputy Chairman ( 1989-1990 ) and then became the president and COO of the Amalgamated Bank of Chicago. In 1993 he again worked as a lawyer and became a partner of Mayer, Brown & Platt, one of the world's largest law firms.

1993 Daley was special advisor to President Clinton during the negotiations of the North American Free Trade Agreement ( NAFTA). Four years later, Clinton appointed him at the beginning of his second term in his cabinet. As trade minister, he followed Mickey Kantor and remained until July 2000 to this office when he took over the post of deputy head of the election campaign of Vice President Al Gore. He was responsible for the appointment of a vice presidential candidate for Gore, the choice ultimately fell on Joe Lieberman.

After leaving politics Daley moved to the private sector. In December 2001, he became president of the telecommunications company SBC Communications and should primarily help to reform the group 's image. In May 2004 he entered the service of the bank JPMorgan Chase & Co. and became its Chairman in the Midwest. He is also on the board of directors of Boeing and Merck & Co., he is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

During the primaries for the 2008 presidential election William Daley was one of the prominent supporters of Barack Obama. At times, he was considered a contender for the post of finance minister in a democratic government, but also as a possible candidate for the post of Governor of Illinois. On January 6, 2011, he was appointed by President Obama as chief of staff of the White House; he followed the provisional incumbent Pete Rouse.
