William Schallert

William Joseph Schallert ( born July 6, 1922 in Los Angeles, California) is an American actor in film and television.

Life

William Schallert father, Edwin Schallert, was the chief editor of the theater section in the Los Angeles Times. Therefore, Schallert junior came early with the medium of theater and drama in contact. After finishing school at the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA), he joined in the 1940s, the theater group The Group Theatre, and worked as, among other things directed the likes of Charles Chaplin.

His debut as a film actor was Schallert 1947 in a small supporting role of the short film Doctor Jim on the side of Stuart Erwin. It was the prelude to a more than 50 year career in which Schallert has appeared in numerous films and television series. His reputation grew in 1963 when he took over the male lead role in The Patty Duke Show, and was on display until 1966 in 104 episodes of the TV series. Also a major role in a series he took between 1986 and 1988 in 44 episodes of The New Gidget. In addition to Robert E. Lee in North and South in 1986, he played with Harry Hopkins in 1988 War and Remembrance another historical personality. In recent years, he was also a guest performer of the television series Desperate Housewives and Zack and Cody on board in front of the camera.

Schallert 1979 was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild, the Screen Actors Guild in Hollywood; a post which he held until 1981, held for two years.

On February 26, 1949, he appeared with Rosemarie Diann Waggner down the aisle. The couple, who is married to this day, was the parents of four sons.
