Wolfgang

Wolfgang is a German male first name.

Origin and Meaning

Wolfgang is composed of Germanic * Wulfa, Wolf, and Old High German gang, gang, walking.

Jacob Grimm understands the wolf here as a magical, sacred animal, which foretells the victory in battle, and according to Wolfgang as a "hero name ".

The Germans feared and revered the wolf as equally strong and courageous fighter. " In a devastating predator, the man felt transformed when he went into the battle; then he was even a wolf. '" There may be a warrior drew to a wolf fur over, in the belief that the power and danger of the animal thereby transferring all on him. Perhaps he also had a peculiar way of walking the wolf or crawl.

In Germanic mythology, the two wolves Geri and Freki accompany the supreme god Odin; which certainly had influence on the naming. Originally a Namengebungsmotiv but Bach suspects a desire of parents for their child: " ... that he would be given by a name spell the admired characteristics of the animal (...)".
