Wonju

Wonju is a South Korean city. It is the most populous city of the north-eastern Gangwon Province of the country.

Wonju is bordered to the north by the county Hoengseong and on the east by the county Yeongwol, both of which also belong to the province of Gangwon. In the west the city is bordered by the Gyeonggi Province, on the south by the province of Chungcheongbuk.

In Wonju has three universities: Sangji University, Halla University ( private), Yonsei University (private, second campus next to Seoul).

History

The city was founded in 678 as Bugwongyeong (北 原 京), 940 followed its renaming in Wonju. In 1395 it was the administrative seat of Gangwon Province, and remained so until the reorganization of the administrative structure in 1896, as Chuncheon the new provincial capital was.

Between 1910 and 1945, Korea was part of the Japanese Empire. Since Japanese was the national language at this time, the city name原 州was read Japanese Genshu.

Attractions

East of the town is the National Park Chiaksan which covers an area of 181 km ². The highest elevation is the Birobong with 1288 m. In the area of the national park are also several historic temples: Kuryongsa, Sangwonsa and Ipseoksa.
