Yangzhou (Chinese扬州 市/扬州 市, pinyin Yangzhou Shì ) is a prefecture -level city in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. It lies on the Yangtze River. Your administrative area has an area of 6591 km ² and nearly 4.5 million inhabitants (as at end 2010).
Yangzhou is located about 70 km from Nanjing Road. Previously it was a major hub for the salt trade. Due to its position directly on the Grand Canal, it was in the Middle Ages to a very wealthy and powerful trading city. With the introduction of the railway lines in China, it lost its importance as a major trading site. Marco Polo spent here ( allegedly) for several years as governor for the rulers of the Yuan Dynasty.
Today Yangzhou is known nationwide for the three gardens Shouxihu Gong Yuan, Ge Yuan and He Yuan. This created in the classic style gardens of the Tang period attract the most tourists from within the country. Outside China, Yangzhou is very respected in Japan. One of the most important missionaries of Buddhism in Japan was Jianzhen, a monk from the monastery Daming Si near the city limits. You can see the Japanese influence on three major pagodas are a gift from Japan and reflect the style of Japanese pagodas.
The city was from the 10th to the 14th century, a cultural center and the most important poets and artists of the time worked and lived in the city. Well known is the school of painting of the Eight Eccentrics of which can be seen in Yangzhou Museum images.
Cultural history are also of importance, the resulting Islamic graves from the Song period at the banks of the Chang Jiang.
The former President of the People 's Republic of China Jiang Zemin was born in 1926 in Yangzhou.
Administrative Divisions
At county level, Yangzhou sets of three boroughs, a circle and two independent cities together ( Population figures are census 2010). These are:
- Municipality Guangling (广陵区), 468 km ², 341 043 inhabitants, the seat of the city government, the city center;
- City Hanjiang District (邗江区), 553 km ², 576 909 inhabitants;
- Municipality Jiangdu (江都 区), 1330 km ², 1,006,372 inhabitants;
- Baoying county (宝应 县), 1461 km ², 752 425 inhabitants, capital: greater community Anyi (安 宜 镇);
- Yizheng City (仪征 市), 857 km ², 564 021 inhabitants;
- Gaoyou City (高邮 市), 1922 km ², 744 685 inhabitants.
During the 2010 census still existed Weiyang district of the city with 474 611 inhabitants. It was disbanded in October 2011.
Sports
In the city, the 5500 -seat Yangzhou Sports Center Gym is located. Since 2006, Yangzhou Jianzhen Half Marathon takes place (named after the monk Jianzhen ).
