Isaac Leffler

Isaac Leffler ( born November 7, 1788 at Washington County, Pennsylvania, † March 8, 1866 in Chariton, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1827 and 1829 he represented the state of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Isaac Leffler was the older brother of Congressman Shepherd Leffler ( 1811-1879 ). He was born on the plantation Sylvia 's Plain of his grandfather and then attended the public schools of his home. He then attended Jefferson College in Canonsburg. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in Wheeling in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1817 and 1833 he was several times in the House of Representatives from Virginia. In 1827 he was a member of the State Board of Public Works. In the 1820s he joined the movement against the future President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the short-lived National Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1826 Leffler was in the 18th electoral district of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Joseph Johnson on March 4, 1827. Since he has not been confirmed in 1828, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1829. This was marked by the fierce debate between supporters and opponents of Andrew Jackson.

1835 moved Isacc Leffler in the Michigan Territory, where he settled down in the future State of Iowa in the area of ​​today's Des Moines County. In his new home, he practiced first as a lawyer. In 1836 he was also a judge there. After the founding of the Wisconsin Territory, he was elected to the local territorial parliament. In 1837 he was president of this chamber. In 1841 he was elected to the Territorial House of Representatives of the Iowa Territory; 1843 to 1845 he was a U.S. Marshal for the District of Iowa. In the following years he was a lawyer in Burlington. From 1852 to 1853 he served as tax collector in Chariton Land District in Iowa. Isaac Leffler died on 8 March 1866 in Chariton.
