Robert Rutherford

Robert Rutherford ( born October 20, 1728 in Scotland, † October 10, 1803 at Charlestown, Virginia ) was an American politician. Between 1793 and 1797 he represented the state of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Robert Rutherford was taught at the Edinburgh Royal College. He then emigrated to the then British colonies of North America, where he first settled later in Tennessee. He later moved to Winchester, Virginia. There he worked as a surveyor and shopkeepers. In addition, he was also involved in other activities. Among other things, he acquired large estates. Since 1750 he was a friend of George Washington, who was then acquired a plantation in what is now West Virginia. In the following years, Rutherford participated in several Indian wars.

At the outbreak of the American Revolution, Rutherford joined this movement. In the years 1775 and 1776, he was a delegate at meetings in Richmond and Williamsburg, discuss in the future political organization of Virginia. He was also one of the delegates, who told the British governor John Murray, that Virginia will put the crown no troops to fight the Revolution are available. In the following years Rutherford was politically active in Virginia. Between 1776 and 1790 he was a member of the State Senate. He joined the movement against the federal government under his old friend George Washington (Anti - Administration Group ). In the second half of the 1790s he became a member of, founded by Thomas Jefferson Democratic- Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1792 Rutherford was elected in the first district of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of Alexander White on March 4, 1793. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1797 two legislative sessions. In 1796 he lost to Daniel Morgan of the Federalist Party. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Rutherford moved to his estate Flowing Spring near Charles Town in present-day West Virginia. There he is on October 10, 1803 and passed away.
