Commissioning

U 120 was given on 27 May 1916 in contract, expired on June 20, 1918 at the AG Vulcan in Hamburg from the stack and was put into service on 31 August 1918. The boat was assigned to the U- Flotilla Mediterranean. The first and only German commander was Lieutenant Hans- Joachim von Mellenthin.

Commander

From Mellenthin had already been awarded the Order Pour le Mérite, when he took command of U 120. With UB 43 and UB 49 he had sunk together more than 150,000 GRT ship space. By war's end, however, he could not perform more patrol with U 120.

Whereabouts

On November 22, 1918 U 120 was delivered to the Kingdom of Italy and scrapped after a short visit to tour in April 1919 in La Spezia.
