SM U 36

SM U 36 was a German U- boat of the Imperial Navy.

History

The boat was commissioned on March 29, 1912 at the Germania shipyard in Kiel commissioned and put into service on 14 November 1914.

World War I

On July 22, 1915 a group of fishing boats west of the Orkneys was sunk by U 36. In the following two days, nine other fishing boats and three merchant ships were sunk ( a French, a Russian and a Norwegian ). The armed merchant ship Columbella could escape U 36. In addition, the 1500 -ton four-masted Pass of Balhama was sent as a prize to Germany where they converted to an auxiliary cruiser. In 1917 he led an SMS Eagle, under the command of Count Felix von Luckner, successful privateering.

Whereabouts

On July 24, 1915 U got 36, near the island of North Rona, the British submarine HMS Prince Charles event. Unknowingly went the boat up to 600 meters of the ship coming on when the Prince Charles suddenly hoisted the British ensign and opened fire. U 36 was completely surprised and sank after heavy hits. The commander and 15 of his men were rescued. 18 sailors were killed.
