Surbourg

Surbourg ( German Surburg ) is a municipality with 1611 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in Alsace region of France. The community is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes du Soultzerland.

History

Surbourg has a share in the former Holy Forestry and today Haguenau Forest. In his area, Surbourger on communal land, the oldest monastery in the Alsace region is ( monastery Surbourg ); It was founded in the 6th century by Arbogast of Strasbourg. The Romanesque church of the later Benedictine monastery was preserved and now serves as a parish church. It is dedicated to John the Baptist, who is depicted on the coat of arms. ( Some of them also known as St. Arbogast or as St. Martin. )

Attractions

The Roman road leads over Surbourg. The Romanesque parish church is a three-aisled basilica from the mid-11th century. The round arches of the nave are supported in turn by square pillars and columns with simple cushion capitals.
