Weiden am See is a municipality with 2278 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Burgenland in the district of Neusiedl am See in Austria. The Hungarian name of the village is Védeny.

The wine-growing town on the northeastern shore of Lake Neusiedl is located about two kilometers south-east of the district capital of Neusiedl am See.

History

Pastures was first mentioned in 1338 and came to 1413 in the possession of the Raab (Győr ) cathedral chapter. In 1588 the town was granted market rights. Severe damage suffered the place during the Turkish wars in 1529 and 1683 as well as in Kuruzzenkrieg 1704-1709. 1606 a large fire devastated the town. The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary (so-called " German West Hungary "). Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Védeny. After the end of World War II, the majority of the German Western Hungary in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria was granted after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ). Market town is Weiden am See since 1588 ( by Market Law ceremony Rudolf II).

Coat of arms

Blazon: A red shield, which is crossed in the middle of a natural flow and carries the Latin name ' Lacus Fertö ' in itself. From an upscale from the arms bottom three green mountain two intersecting green vines growing up with two red grapes. In the upper part of the right and left two gold stars, in the middle of a large silver W, the initial of the name.
