Winden am See is a municipality in the district of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland in Austria with 1307 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013).

The Hungarian name of the village is Sásony.

Geography

Winden am See is the only place in the community.

Neighboring municipalities are: Jois, width Brunn and Kaisersteinbruch

History

The place was like the rest of Burgenland to 1920/21 Hungary ( German West Hungary).

Since 1898, had to be used because of Magyarization the government in Budapest the Hungarian name Sásony. After the end of World War II German West Hungary was awarded in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 Austria after tough negotiations. The place belongs since 1921 to the newly founded State of Burgenland (see also history of Burgenland ).

Culture

By royal grant of 1203 Heiligenkreuz Abbey had become the rule over the territory of the royal court, winches, Podersdorf, Gols and Kaisersteinbruch.

The most important masters of the Leitha Mountains, Hofsteinmetz Elias hill, organized and directed the made necessary by the new Turkish wars of Catholic church buildings.

Parish Church of St. Florian Winden am See: baroque, built in 1725 by the imperial Hofsteinmetz and church builder Elias hill after 1683 the old parish church was burnt down by the invasion of the Turks. Two western towers. 1997/98 contemporary redesign of altar and a lectern by Wander Bertoni.

Open-air museum Wander Bertoni: the open-air museum of the sculptor Wander Bertoni was involved in the old Gritsch - mill, it will be about 480 objects shown; Construction of a new exhibition pavilion by architect Johannes Spalt

Zeiler Mountain: The Zeiler mountain, with its arid grassland habitat for many species of butterflies and other rare insects Pannonian climate zone. The Zeiler mountain is located about 3 km north of winds on the lake.
Wind Kirchberg: the Kirchberg east of the village is home to a dry grassland with an occurrence of the rare sand Lotwurz.
Bear's Den: at the foot of the mountain Zeiler are the entrances to the bear cave, in which the greater mouse-eared, Austria's largest bat, his lair was. In the cave skeletons were discovered by cave bear and other extinct mammals. Since February 4, 1929, the cave is a protected monument.
The sunbathers made by Wander Bertoni, at Kirchberg is the largest sculpture in the church and was built in 1963 of solid iron.
