West Melbourne is a city in Brevard County in the U.S. state of Florida with 18,355 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

West Melbourne is adjacent to the cities of Melbourne, Palm Bay and Melbourne Village. The town is located about 50 km south of Titusville and about 90 km southwest of Orlando.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 18,355 inhabitants distributed to 8,881 households. The population density was 695.3 inh. / Km ². 85.5 % of the population were white, 4.9% African American, 0.3% Native American and 5.0 % Asian Americans. 1.5% were members of other ethnic groups and 2.8% in different ethnic groups. 9.0 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 33.9 % of all households lived in 28.3 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 63.7 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.34 persons and the average family size is 2.89 people.

23.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.1% were 20-39 years old, 26.6 % were 40-59 years old and 27.3 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 43 years. 47.6 % of the population were male and 52.4 % female.

The average annual income was $ 52,922, while 8.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 91.90 % of the population spoke Spanish 5.75% and 2.35 % had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

West Melbourne is crossed by Interstate 95 and U.S. Highway 192 (SR 500). Just north of the city is Melbourne International Airport.
