Background

The Grand Prix of Germany 1956 was the penultimate race of the Formula 1 season 1956. Drivers World Championship at that time was still open and eleven drivers had to be theoretical chances world champion. The race took place again after a year, 1955, the planned Grand Prix of Germany 1955 was canceled after the accident at the 24 - hour race at Le Mans in 1955. Ferrari won three of the previous four Formula 1 race on the Nürburgring, 1954 won Fangio on Mercedes. Fangio was the only participating driver of the Grand Prix of Germany in 1956, who previously won the race before.
