1973 Giro d'Italia

The 56th Giro d' Italia was held in 21 sections and 3801 kilometers from May 18 to June 9, 1973, won by the Belgian Eddy Merckx. Merckx had secured the Maglia rosa in the prologue and there was no let up until the end of the tour. 113 Of the 140 riders started reached the finish in Trieste. The tour led to foreign countries start in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, France and Switzerland to Italy. This was, apart from the start in Vatican City the following year, for the next 23 years to 1996, the last real foreign start of the Giro.
