Bolsena

Bolsena is a town with 4147 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Bolsena is situated in the volcanic incurred Monti Volsini on Lake Bolsena, a entstandenem by the collapse of an underground magma chambers lake. The Vulcano Vulsinio began his volcanic activity some 600,000 years ago and was the last time 103 BC active.

The municipality also includes the villages of St. Anthony and Val di Lago.

Traffic

Bolsena is situated on the state road SS 2 Cassia, which connects Rome and Florence. The nearest train station is in Montefiascone. Bus lines connect the city with, inter alia, Orvieto, Viterbo and Rome.

History

Probably originated Bolsena, when the Romans relocated the inhabitants of the conquered Etruscan main town Volsinii here, hence its ancient name Volsinii Novi Bolsena. Some scientists suspect the central sanctuary of the Etruscans for the God Voltumna Fanum Voltumnae, very close. In Bolsena excavations are to be visited, the uncovered part of the Roman settlement ( large main square, cisterns, amphitheater, catacombs ). By Bolsena The Via Cassia, one of the ancient Roman roads that led from Rome to Tuscany and handed in the extension to Genoa. During the Middle Ages this route part of the pilgrimage route of Via Francigena, was attracted to the pilgrims of Canterbury in England over the Alps to Rome.

Miracle of Bolsena

In the church of the saints buried here Christina not only catacombs can be visited, but also blood stains on the altar stone that should result from a blood miracle. A Bohemian priest who doubted the Transubstantiation, came in 1263 on his pilgrimage to Rome. In the Holy Mass he broke there a wafer from which dripped blood, according to legend. Then, the cathedral was built in the nearby Orvieto, where the corporal is kept as a relic.

The Feast of St.. Christina is celebrated in Bolsena each year on July 24th with great effort. The life history of the saints who died there in the year 304 as a martyr, is set in the form of a mystery play at various places in the resort scene.

Paolo Dottarelli ( PdL ) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His center-right alliance also with 11 of 16 seats, the majority in the City Council. He replaced Paolo Equitani, who did not run.

In and around Bolsena is the white wine Est! Est! Est! grown, was originally invented in the neighboring Montefiascone (see Viticulture in Italy).
