Marta is a municipality with 13,530 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Viterbo in the Italian region Latium, on the southwestern shore of Lake Bolsena.

Geography

Marta is located 100 km north-west of Rome, 40 km north of Tarquinia and 23 km north-west of Viterbo. Here is the only outflow from the lake of Bolsena, the river Marta, which drains the lake into the Tyrrhenian Sea. The municipal area Isola Martana heard in Lake Bolsena. The municipality covers an altitude 260-430 m asl

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (slightly endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Capodimonte, Montefiscone, Tuscania and Viterbo.

Traffic

Marta is located on the provincial road SP 8 Strada Martana that connects the village to the Via Cassia, which leads from Rome to Florence via Siena. The nearest highway exit on the A1 Autostrada del Sole is 42 km Orvieto. The nearest train station is in Montefiascone on the railway line Orte-Viterbo at 14 km.

The place was first mentioned in the year 726 for the first time.

The coat of arms shows the Saint Martha, which also gives the town its name.

Economy

More important industry is tourism. In Marta is a modern fish hatchery to the fishery in Lake Bolsena to secure the foundation.
