Pontremoli

Pontremoli is a municipality with 7593 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Massa -Carrara in Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers about 183 km ². It is located about 160 km northwest of Florence, about 50 km northwest of Massa and 45 km north- west of Carrara in the Apuan Alps. It is the northernmost municipality of Tuscany and is located on the river Magra and Verde river and Gordana. In addition, it is located on the Via Francigena. Pontremoli is characterized by a large height difference, the main town lies at 236 m above sea level, the district Arzelato contrast, at 903 m above sea level.

The neighboring municipalities are Albareto (PR ), Berceto (PR ), Borgo Val di Taro (PR ), Corniglio (PR ), Filattiera, Mulazzo, Villafranca in Lunigiana and Zeri.

History

From the Romans the place Apua was called, the present name comes from the words Ponte and tremare ( trembling bridge). The village was built around Pontremoli Castle. From Sigerich, Archbishop of Canterbury, the place was mentioned 990 in his description of the Via Francigena as Puntremel. At that time the place was free commune, which was recognized by Frederick Barbarossa and Frederick II. The community was then supported by Parma and Piacenza, which was in conflict with the Malaspina. The lying near mountain pass Passo della Cisa was considered a gateway to Tuscany. 1331 of the Municipality of John of Luxembourg at Mastino II della Scala was sold. Eight years later the place went to the Visconti of Milan and 1404 at the Fieschi of Genoa, return to the Visconti to 1433. 1441 was the commune next to Cremona part of the dowry of Bianca Maria Visconti to Francesco Sforza, however, was reunited with the succession of Sforza in the duchy of Milan in 1450 with remaining Duchy. Subsequent changes of ownership of Milan did not affect the membership of Pontremoli, so that only in 1647 with the acquisition by the Republic of Genoa, a new important year is recorded. 1650 joined the Duchy of Tuscany at Pontremoli. 1778 Leopold II recognized the place adding to Città nobile. After the Napoleonic occupation from 1805 to 1814 he was once again independent and occupied in 1847 by the County of Modena. The district Arzelato 1957 came to church, before he was one of Zeri.

From 1797 to 1988 was Pontremoli seat of a diocese of the same name, which was founded in 1988 united with the diocese of Massa to the diocese of Massa Carrara - Pontremoli. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Popolo has since co-cathedral of the diocese.

Attractions

  • The Chiesa di San Giacomo al Campo was first mentioned in 1187.
  • The Cathedral Duomo di Pontremoli, also Concattedrale di Santa Maria del Popolo, was built in 1630. The façade was built in 1878-1881 by Giovanni Pacini and Pasquale Poccianti after drawings by Vincenzo Micheli. The cathedral contains the work Nascita della Vergine by Giovanni Domenico Ferretti.
  • The Museo delle Statue Stele ( Stelae Museum ) shows Statuenmenhire the Lunigiana and is located in Pontremoli Castle. On display is, among others, a female Statuenmenhir.
  • The Teatro della Rosa was built in 1739.

Town of Books

The Premio is Bancarella since 1953 every year in late July and awarded is an Italian literary prize. The first prize winner was Ernest Hemingway with The Old Man and the Sea, other prize winners have included Umberto Eco (1989, Foucault's Pendulum ) or Frank Schätzing (2007, Death and the Devil ). In addition, the Bancarellino, a Youth Literature Prize, and the Bancarella sport is also awarded annually ( Sports Book Prize ). Because of literary prizes, the community is also known as La città del libro ( book city).

Traffic

Pontremoli has a junction to the A15 motorway, also called Autocamionale della Cisa, which runs from Parma to La Spezia.
