Auchy-au-Bois

Auchy -au -Bois is a commune with 1060 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Pas -de- Calais, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes Artois -Lys.

Geography

Auchy -au -Bois is located 50 kilometers west-southwest of Lille and about 60 kilometers southwest of Calais.

History

Historical significance had the little village on the pilgrimage route of Via Francigena hardly. The economic boom in the 19th century was of short duration.

Culture and sights

Besides the Gothic church of Saint- Gilles from 1669 the medieval tower of the Château de Fromentel is of cultural and historical significance.

Economy

Middle of the 19th century, coal deposits were mined underground. The deposits were exploited from 1852 to 1886. It also paleobotanical findings could be deduced.
