History

The origin of the place lies in roman, if not Gallic time. This is suggested by coins back ( triene ), which were found here, as well as the suffix "- acum " in the Latin names " Carbnacum " and " Corbnacum ". The place was even then at the crossroads of the Gallic road from Fismes after Dizy -le- Gros and the Roman road from Reims to Arras.

The Carolingian era was in Corbeny a royal palace ( Cobanacum palatium ) that the Younger, Charlemagne and Charles the Simple was visited by Pippin. The latter brought here under the relics of St. Markulf that were carried by monks from Coutances on the run from the Normans. The church, built in honor of the saint was visited by the French kings traditionally the day after her coronation in Reims. Charles the Simple gave Corbeny at his wedding in April 907 Frederuna his wife, which the monks of the local priory, which was under the Abbey of Saint- Remi in Reims inherited. Corbeny was part of the Via Francigena pilgrimage route to Rome.

A second heyday Corbeny learned during the occupation of northern France by the British in the 14th century. At that time there were in place between 600 and 700 fire, what about 2000 to 2500 inhabitants corresponded. Middle of the 15th century was Corbeny of King Louis XI. exempt from the tax obligation.

During the Battle of the Aisne (1917 ) Corbeny was - and thus also the priory and the church from the 11th century - completely destroyed.
