1978–79 Division 1 season (Swedish ice hockey)
The 1978/79 season was the fourth season of Division 1 as the second highest Swedish hockey league.

Mode
The league was divided into the main round in four groups. The northern group had nine teams with a participant less than the other three groups. The top four teams from each group qualified for the playoffs, where the groups North and East as well as the groups fought out South and West common playoffs. The two winners of each playoff group qualified again for the Kvalserien in which they met on the second last of the Elitserien. The two winners of Kvalserien were allowed to compete in the following season in the Elitserien. The two last placed each main round group went directly into the Division 2. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
