Background
As Didier Pironi, due to its previously suffered during practice for the Grand Prix of Germany at the weekend injuries could no longer take part in the Formula 1 World Championship, the Scuderia Ferrari entered with only one car for Patrick Tambay.
Training
The two Brabham pilots Nelson Piquet and Riccardo Patrese qualified sovereign for the first row.
