Participants and mode

Last year's league champion DSG Rotschitzen had not risen to the Bundesliga and had retired from the state leagues.

After the Alps League had previously paused in favor of a European League Cups, she was once again brought before the state championships of Austria, Slovenia and Italy (see Alps League 1995/96 ). There, the VEU Feldkirch had prevailed against seventeen other participants. The following Austrian championship VEU also managed for the first time winning both championships in one season, thus founding a lasting until 1999 dominance in the Austrian Hockey. The CE Vienna qualified for the discharge 1996/97 of the European Hockey League.

In the regular season, the teams played four times against each other, which resulted in a total of 28 games per team. The quarter final was played with return game, where first wins and then included the goal difference. Semifinals and finals were played in best-of -five - mode.
