1996–97 Austrian Hockey League season

The Austrian Hockey League in 1996/97 was held with six clubs. Champion for the fourth time in a row and the eighth time in the club's history defending VEU Feldkirch, who won in the final against EC KAC.

Participants and mode

After the preseason after the EV Zeltweg of sporting and EHC Lustenau were relegated for financial reasons, occurred in the current season, only six teams to fight for the title. The Alps League, which had been suspended last year in favor of a European League Cups, was again brought before the State League (see Alps League 1996/97), the three best teams - VEU Feldkirch, EC KAC and EC VSV - were set for the semifinals. To the fourth semi-final place ( against Alps League Victors Feldkirch ) contributed the remaining three teams during the group stage of the Alps league with a repechage round-trip round. Semifinals and finals were played in the best of seven mode.

With a clear 4-2 victory in the final series, the VEU Feldkirch secured the eighth league title ( the fourth in series ), and successfully defended the title. With the Alps League Championship VEU was able to win two titles in a season.
