1997–98 Bundesliga

The 1997/98 season was the 35th season of the Bundesliga of men. It began on 1 August 1997 and ended on 9 May 1998. First and thus German champion was the first FC Kaiserslautern. For the first time in Bundesliga history was a climber at first champion.

Cup duel

The season was marked by the title duel between 1.FC Kaiserslautern, who had just gained from the 2nd Bundesliga, and the defending champions Bayern Munich. Already on the first day - when it was not foreseeable that this game would be the top duel of the season - it came to a direct encounter between the two clubs. FCK, coached by Otto Rehhagel, won 1-0 in Munich's Olympic Stadium. The volatile nature of the victory won by the fact that it was Rehhagel's first game against the FCB since its release there in 1996. By a 1-0 win over Hertha BSC FCK climbed on the second match top of the table and held the top position then without interruption from the fourth to the last match held. Also the return leg against Bayern at the Betz Mountain won the FCK (2-0), and despite a weak phase towards the end of the season, the Kaiserslautern secured the title early: At the penultimate round defeated Kaiserslautern the Mitaufsteiger VfL Wolfsburg at home 4-0 while the competitor from Munich at MSV Duisburg reached only 0-0. Kaiserslautern had so before the final matchday one unassailable lead of four points and stable as champion.

FC Bayern Munich under coach Giovanni Trapattoni allowed in addition to the losses to the FCK Another surprising point losses, but in the end was runner-up and won the DFB-Pokal. In this competition, Bayern were both against Kaiserslautern ( 2-1 away win in the second round ) and Duisburg revenge ( 2-1 win in the final in Berlin). In the Champions League, however, was pulled in the German match against Borussia Dortmund lose out.

The first and the FCB FCK qualified for the Champions League; for the European Cup Winners' Cup, which was 1998/99, last time played, thus qualifying the defeated Cup finalist from Duisburg.

Decisions on the final day

Since the master question was decided prematurely, it went on the last day only to the European Cup places and the relegation places. Bayer 04 Leverkusen was already established as a third party and thus UEFA Cup contenders; Moreover, the FC Schalke 04 and VfB Stuttgart qualified. Looking up had Werder Bremen, which was defeated in a direct duel in Stuttgart and Hansa Rostock, which was the sixth place and the entry into the Intertoto Cup after an outstanding season.

Arminia Bielefeld was prematurely firmly relegated. With the 2nd Bundesliga was the founding member of 1st FC Cologne, which was relegated for the first time, and after eleven years of first division Karlsruher SC. The KSC, on the first and third round leader, slipped a 2:4 in Rostock on the third to last place ( with 38 points KSC increased with the date (2012 ) the highest score since the introduction of three points for a win in the Bundesliga from ), while Borussia Moenchengladbach is rescued by a 2-0 win in Wolfsburg. By the descent of Cologne Hamburger SV since 1998, the last club that has never been relegated from the Bundesliga since the first season 1963/64.

Other clubs

In addition to Kaiserslautern the other two promoted VfL Wolfsburg and Hertha BSC remained in the league. All climbers were represented by 2006 in the premier league without interruption.

Borussia Dortmund could with the new coach Nevio Scala the high expectations do not meet, but reached the Champions League semi-final, in which Borussia Dortmund against Real Madrid was eliminated. In the German duel against Bayern Munich, Dortmund had in the quarterfinals the upper hand (0-0 away, 1-0 after extra time at home). VfB Stuttgart under Joachim Löw reached the European Cup winners the final, then failed, however, in Stockholm 0-1 at Chelsea. Despite a fourth table space and the associated qualification for the UEFA Cup, Löw was dismissed at season's end and replaced by Winfried Schäfer.

Miscellaneous

Legendary was a press conference by the coach of FC Bayern, Giovanni Trapattoni, with the quotes: "What liberty Strunz " " empty bottle ", and "I have done" entered the German language.

On 27 Round were canceled due to Castor transports several encounters. They were rescheduled after the 32nd Round, which has been criticized in some quarters as a distortion of competition.
