The 19th arrondissement of Paris, the district of the Buttes- Chaumont, the most north-easterly of the 20 arrondissements of Paris. It was founded in 1860 new and consists of the following places: the former municipality of La Villette, parts of Aubervilliers and Pantin, as well as parts of the former municipality of Belleville.

Geographical location

The 19th arrondissement is Rive Droite. Its south-eastern part lies on a hill ( Butte Chaumont ), sloping down to the north-west to the Canal de l' Ourcq. To the north it borders the municipality of Aubervilliers, on the east by Pantin and Le Pré -Saint- Gervais, in the south on the 20th and on the west by the 18th and 10th arrondissement,

Town hall

The town hall of the 19th arrondissement is located in the Place Armand Carrel 5-7. The building was built in 1869 by architect Gabriel Davioud.

Mayor

Mayor since 1995 is Roger Madec (3rd mandate in 2008 ), member of the Socialist Party PS.

Infrastructure

The two most important streets of the arrondissements are the Avenue de Flandre and the Avenue Jean -Jaurès, both reach the Place de la Bataille -de- Stalingrad.

The 19th arrondissement is crossed by the canals Canal Saint -Denis and the Canal de l' Ourcq, which flow south of the Parc de la Villette in the Bassin de la Villette, which is connected to the Canal Saint -Martin ( 10th arrondissement ).

Green spaces

There are two large parks in the district: the modern, opened in 1986 Parc de la Villette and the picturesque Parc des Buttes -Chaumont, designed in 1867 by Jean -Charles Alphand.
