With the launch of the first attacks from the peloton started out and after eight kilometers a trio was able to solve as the day before: Sébastien Hinault, Sandy Casar and Manuel Quinziato. They could quickly lead to a four minutes drive out, which remained constant during the remaining flight. The three outliers secured the first four intermediate points of the day. In the third mountain stage David Moncoutie could extend his lead in the mountains classification by another three points as his competitors all day collecting no points. At kilometer 142, the stage was unexpectedly exciting, as the co-favorite Alejandro Valverde fell back from the main field and lack of team support had problems to restore the connection. At the top of the field, meanwhile, made the team Astana and Euskaltel -Euskadi pressure. First, the group to Valverde with the shortfall at about one minute hold, but gradually the gap was widening. At the end of his deficit was just over 3:20 minutes. The peloton was now always continued to shrink and was 30 kilometers from the finish only 50 riders. The escapees were asked before the second intermediate sprint. On the rising home straight so the favorites in the general classification as well as good one-day racers made primarily the decision between themselves. The stage was won in the end won by Italian Paolo Bettini before his compatriot Davide Rebellin.
