Background
After the European Grand Prix Jenson Button led the Drivers' Championship with 18 points in front of Rubens Barrichello and 20.5 points ahead of Mark Webber. Brawn -Mercedes resulted in the Constructors' Championship with 27.5 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 80 points ahead of Ferrari.
With Kimi Raikkonen (three times) joined former winner of this Grand Prix.
Training
In the first free practice session it started to rain after a short time, so it was impossible for the pilots to improve their lap times achieved to date. Jarno Trulli achieved thus more by luck than by performance the fastest lap. In the second session, which took place under dry conditions, world champion Lewis Hamilton secured the leading position just ahead of Timo Glock. Third place went to Kimi Raikkonen. The fastest lap in the third free practice drove Nick Heidfeld in Jarno Trulli and Adrian Sutil.
Qualifying
In the first phase of qualifying Giancarlo Fisichella scored the fastest lap. The Toro Rosso drivers, Nakajima, Grosjean and Badoer retired from. Race
At the start Fisichella kept the lead, whereas otherwise it came to some shifts. Barrichello almost stopped and was overtaken by most drivers. Räikkönen made a good start and improved behind Robert Kubica in third place. On the Kemmel straight line of the Finn to Kubica pulled over and took a second place. In the back field there were two collisions: Grosjean turned button of the track and Jaime Alguersuari collided with Hamilton. For all four drivers, the race was stopped on the spot. At the restart of the race, Räikkönen was shuttling directly behind Fisichella after La Source. From the slipstream Raikkonen moved with the help of KERS by on the Kemmel straight to Fisichella and took the lead. Until his pit stop on lap twelve BMW Sauber driver Kubica remained behind the two leaders. Raikkonen and Fisichella came in the 14th round at the same time to the box. At the order of the pit stop did not change. Also in the 14th round stopped Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld, who, after Webber had received the signal to continue his pit crew zufrüh, would almost collided in the pit lane.
