Background

After the Singapore Grand Prix Mark Webber led the drivers' championship with eleven points ahead of Fernando Alonso and with 20 Points before Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull -Renault resulted in the constructors' championship with 24 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 64 points ahead of Ferrari.

With Michael Schumacher ( six times ), Alonso ( twice), Rubens Barrichello, Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel ( once each ) were five former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice Vettel posted the fastest lap in front of his team-mate Webber and Robert Kubica. Race

Even before the start of the Grand Prix weekend for di Grassi was finished. The Virgin pilot came in the lap to the grid from the 130R off the track and crashed into the tire wall. He could leave the car unharmed, but it was so badly damaged that he had to do without for the start. A technical defect was subsequently excluded.

At the start Vettel claimed the lead. His teammate Webber lost the second place starting position to Kubica. In the central part of the field Petrov overlooked the Williams Cosworth Nico Hülkenberg and collided with him. In the first curve, there was a further incident. Massa attempted to pass right to Nico Rosberg. He came onto the grass, his car picked up from the curb and collided with Liuzzi. All four pilots dropped out and solved with the salvage operations a safety car phase. In the third round, which was run behind the safety car, different also from Kubica. At its race car to the right rear wheel had come loose and he had to leave his car on three wheels.

At the restart of the race, there were no shifts at the top. Vettel kept his lead over Webber, Alonso, Button and Hamilton. Local hero Kamui Kobayashi was initially in eleventh place behind Alguersuari. He surprised the Toro Rosso drivers with a late braking maneuver in the Hairpin curve and walked past him. Four laps later, Kobayashi overtook at the same point Adrian Sutil.

A little later the pilots who had not stopped in the safety car phase began with the pit stops. Webber came a round after Vettel and thus took the lead for one lap. Since Hamilton got transmission problems and he could no longer engage the third gear, succeeded his teammate Button to drive past him easily. In midfield, Kobayashi was back behind Alguersuari and attacked the Spaniard again in the hairpin curve. This time Alguersuari tried not so easy let him pass and thereby damaged his front wing. Kobayashi made ​​another good position, as Sutil failed with an engine failure.

In the meantime, a prolonged position battle for sixth place between Mercedes drivers had developed. Rosberg was thanks to a previous stops in front of Schumacher and held him for a long time behind. In the 47th round of the duel was decided by a technical defect. Rosberg's rear suspension broke in the Dunlop curve and he crashed into the tire wall. He was seen with six laps down. Meanwhile, Kobayashi also had Barrichello and his team-mate Nick Heidfeld outdated. In Schumacher, however, he no longer unlocked.

Finally, Vettel won the race ahead of Webber and Alonso. On the fourth and fifth place followed by the McLaren drivers Button and Hamilton. Schumacher was ahead of Kobayashi, Heidfeld, Barrichello and Buemi sixth. Heidfeld, who had just completed his second race of the season, scored his first points.
