The Malaysian Grand Prix on 4 April 2010 took place at the Sepang International Circuit in Sepang and was the third race of the Formula 1 2010 season.

Background

According to the Australian Grand Prix Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Felipe Massa and six points ahead of Jenson Button. Ferrari resulted in the constructors' championship with 16 points ahead of McLaren -Mercedes with 41 points, ahead of Mercedes.

With Michael Schumacher ( three times), Alonso (twice) and button (once) were three former winners of this Grand Prix.

Training

In the first free practice McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap ahead of Nico Rosberg and his team-mate Button. In the second free practice Hamilton maintained the lead position. In second and third place followed by the German pilot Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg. In the third free practice on Saturday Mark Webber was the quickest driver. Hamilton was second ahead of Vettel.

In the first free practice Fairuz Fauzy took for Lotus -Cosworth for the first time participated in a Formula 1 weekend. In addition, Paul di Resta was allowed to drive for Force India -Mercedes again in the first free practice session.

Qualifying

The first phase of qualifying took place in wet conditions. First, the top teams were in the box and only Vettel set a time. When they had finally sent their drivers out on the track, the rain got heavier and therefore managed Alonso, Hamilton and Massa not to qualify for the second part. In addition, the HRT drivers, Jarno Trulli and Lucas di Grassi retired from. The fastest time recorded Robert Kubica. Button had to park his car after a spin. This section also was marked by the wet conditions and again the conditions were worse just before the end. Race

Both suffered an engine failure, which was caused by a problem in the pneumatic system. One lap later, Schumacher had to retire from the race with a technical defect. In the twelfth round, there was again a collision between two pilots of the new teams. Kovalainen collided with di Grassi. While di Grassi was able to continue, Kovalainen had to first engage a repair stop and came at the end of the race with ten laps to the finish and was not scored. Another incident in the twelfth round was the technically caused by Vitantonio Liuzzi failure.

The pit stops, the lead group did not alter the classification. Vettel kept his lead over Webber, who only received a larger residue through a bad pit stop. Between the two pilots was Hamilton who was not even on the box as the Ferrari drivers and di Grassi. In the 33rd round of the race was also for Petrov, who also retired with a technical problem, ended. After also Hamilton and the Ferrari drivers had completed their pit stop, they occupied, led by McLaren duo places six to nine. In the 44th round Massa overtook Button and so took the seventh place. Alonso also tried to walk past Button, but not him succeeded. Two laps to go dropped Alonso, who complained throughout the race problem with the clutch and transmission, with an engine failure.

Finally, Vettel won the race ahead of his team-mate Webber and made thus for a double victory for the Red Bull -Renault. In third place came Rosberg, who an unspectacular, but faultless race, drove to the finish. He scored the first podium for the Mercedes works team since the Italian Grand Prix 1955. Kubica could go out again a good result with a fourth place. Adrian Sutil defended fifth place against Hamilton, Massa and Button.
