The 20th arrondissement of Paris, the Arrondissement de Ménilmontant, is one of Paris' 20 arrondissements. It was founded in 1860 by the amalgamation of the former municipalities of Belleville, Ménilmontant and Charonne.

Geographical location

The 20th arrondissement is located on the right bank of the Seine. It is bordered to the west by the 11th, in the north on the 19th and on the south by the 12th arrondissement.

Demographics

According to the census of 1999 182.952 inhabitants were reported in 598 acres of the 20th arrondissement. This corresponds to a population density of 30 594 inhabitants per km ². Thus, in this Arrondissement 8.3% of the population of Paris their principal residence. The 20th arrondissement is traditionally a working-class neighborhood, which is reflected from the political preference for left-wing parties and has always been a magnet for immigrants, at the beginning of the 20th century from Italy, Poland and Spain, then from the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa; so it is also similar to the adjacent 11th and 19th arrondissements.
