Africa Cup of Nations

The African Cup of Nations (English: Africa Cup of Nations, French for Coupe d' Afrique des Nations ) is organized by the African Football Association Football CAF tournament where the African national football associations determine their continental champions. The acting in the respective year hosting of the FIFA Confederations Cup winners of the African Cup is qualified for this tournament.

In 1957, the African Nations Cup was launched. Since 1968, the tournament is held every two years. In 2010, with effect from 2013, the CAF decided to discharge the African Nations Cup in odd years, so this does not fall in a year with World and European Championships.

In the first edition in 1957, there were only three participants: Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia; Although South Africa wanted to participate, but was excluded under the policy of apartheid. Since then, the tournament has grown steadily, so that a qualifying round was necessary. In 1998, the first time took part in 16 teams at the African Cup of Nations. Since then, the following mode applies: The teams play a preliminary round in four groups of four teams. The top two teams in each group reach the final round, which - will take place in the knockout system - starting with the quarter-finals.

The most successful nation in the previous editions of the Africa Cup is Egypt, which is a total of seven times, was able to secure the title and it won the 2006, 2008 and 2010 three tournaments in a row. Ghana and Cameroon were each four times successfully.

  • The African Cup of Nations was the most frequently chosen by all continental championships in the penalty shootout. In seven of 29 tournaments ( 24.1% ) there was a final with a penalty shootout. If only the tournaments included since introduction of penalty shoot-outs, there are seven of 21 ( 31.8 %). Of the last eight tournaments were decided by four penalties.

The Trophies

In the history of the competition so far, three different trophies were handed over to the respective winners. The first two trophies was allowed to take each permanently in the possession of the victorious Union after the third title. Then the counting began for all associations again.

The first trophy was the " Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem Trophy", named after the first President of the CAF, the Egyptian Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem. Ghana received this silver trophy after his third title in 1978.

The silver also " Trophy of African Unity " or "African Unity Cup " was awarded in 1980 and went in 2000 after his third title win in Cameroon.
