Àlex Corretja
Àlex Corretja i Verdegay ( born April 11, 1974 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish tennis player. He twice reached the final of the French Open, 1998, he was tennis champion. With Spain, he won the 2000 Davis Cup.

Tennis career
Àlex Corretja in 1991 Professional after he had won in the 1990 season at the Junior Orange Bowl the prestigious tournament. In the 1994 season he won his first professional tournament in Buenos Aires. 1996 Corretja reached the quarter-finals for the first time a Grand Slam tournament: in a memorable match of the U.S. Open he lost after 4 hours and 9 minutes the American Pete Sampras. 1997 was a good season in which he also won the Masters Series tournament in Rome, among other things Corretja. At the French Open he reached the finals in 1998, it lost to his compatriot Carlos Moyá however, significantly in three sets. With Moyá to Corretja should provide some fought matches still in the subsequent period, including in the same year in the final of the World Cup, when he was still able to turn a 0-2 sets down and decided the title for themselves. The year ended Corretja # 3 on the world tennis rankings.
In 2000 he celebrated especially team successes. He led the Spanish Davis Cup team to its first title, winning at the side of Albert Costa the bronze medal in the Olympic double. In 2001 he moved again in the final of the French Open, but was defeated again, this time to the Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten. 2003 Corretja reached with Spain one more time the Davis Cup final, the team showed up but inferior to the Australian selection ultimately.
In recent years Corretja gradually disappeared from the tennis world top and dived into the 2005 season only in smaller tournaments. In 2006, he ended his career due to an eye injury.
In the seasons of 2011 and 2012, he was captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.
