Agistri (Greek Αγκίστρι (n. sg. ), Also Agistri ) is a small inhabited Greek island, which belongs to the Saronic Islands. At the same time it forms an independent municipality in the Attica Regional District islands.

Location and nature

The island lies in the Saronic Gulf, about 35 kilometers southwest of Piraeus and six kilometers southwest of the island of Aegina. The Methana peninsula located six kilometers south of the mainland of the Peloponnese 14 kilometers westwards. Agistri is six kilometers long, up to three kilometers wide and has an area of about 14 km ². The island is forested and hilly and reaches a height of 294 meters.

Past and present

On the populated in ancient times the island there are several archaeological sites. Today, about a thousand inhabitants live permanently on the island; in the summer months, the population can easily triple. The population is spread in the two harbors of scale and Milos ( also called Megalochori ) on the north coast, metohi located slightly inland (where there is a small minority of Arvanites ) and Limenaria village in the south.

Economy and Tourism

The few decades ago dominant fishing has become virtually meaningless because of overfishing and pollution of the surrounding waters. Agriculture, too, with the cultivation of olives, cereals and fruit as well as the extraction of resinous resin becomes less important.

The tourism sector is becoming increasingly important. Although mass tourism is still largely unknown, the island will not last visited amplified by local tourists because of its proximity to Athens.

The nearest airport is located in Athens. Made from Piraeus port from regular ferry and hydrofoil connections to Agistri and Aegina. Between the island and places Megalochori scale runs in the season an island bus (only in high season even after Limenaria ). There are also taxis and bicycles, hikers will find some well-maintained forest roads ( forest roads ) before.
