Arrigo Sacchi

Arrigo Sacchi (2007)

Arrigo Sacchi ( born April 1, 1946 in Fusignano (RA ), Italy ) is an Italian football coach.

Career

Sacchi was an average football player in his playing days and was able to celebrate any great success with his club. In 1982 he was in Rimini Calcio in Serie C1 debut as coach. He led the club to Serie B and cared for attention when his team in the Italian Cup 1986/87 season the great AC Milan defeated. Subsequently Milan president Silvio Berlusconi pledged him as coach of the Rossoneri. Thus began a success story. Arrigo Sacchi coined a new offensive style, which the Italian Serie A had rarely experienced in this form. With captain and defensive organizer Franco Baresi, the young attacking full-back Paolo Maldini and the Dutch Duo Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten, he won the 1987/88 Italian Championship. A year later, with Frank Rijkaard was another Dutchman added, they brought the European Champion Clubs' Cup, the Northern Italians were in 1989/90 to defend. In 1989 and 1990 he also won the Intercontinental Cup twice and the European Supercup. He was hailed as the most modern coach of Italy.

This led straight to that Sacchi was appointed coach of the Italian national team in 1991, which was in crisis because they could not qualify for the European Football Championship 1992 in Sweden. Sacchi built on his Italian stars from AC Milan, but what he lacked were the Dutch stars, so that the national team failed to make the desired by Sacchi attacking football. The qualification for the FIFA 1994 World Cup in the United States was nevertheless achieved. However, the tournament began with a disappointment. Italy lost to Ireland 0-1. The crew survived each round scarce, could, among other things thanks to goals from Roberto Baggio play it to the finals. In the final against Brazil it came to the penalty shootout, in which Baresi and Baggio became the tragic hero by they forgave their penalty and so the Brazilians for the fourth time made it possible to win the title.

Two years later, at the European Football Championship in England in 1996, the Sacchi 's team disappointed the fans. The Italians dropped out in the first round and could never really convince.

Sacchi was replaced after this defeat by Cesare Maldini and tried at clubs such as Atletico Madrid and AC Parma again as a club coach, but so far without success, he had reached with AC Milan.
