The Auto Union GmbH in West Germany re- established in late 1949 brought in the summer of 1965, making it the first model with the traditional name of Audi after the Second World War to the market. As of spring 1966, the Audi station wagon variant was available.

Model history

General

The official sales designation was initially only Auto Union "Audi", as he was initially the only vehicle of the new brand. It was generally with regard to the engine power, the name " Audi 72" used later. In the following models the F103 series engine, the horsepower was included in the official model number. During Audi 60 with 55 hp was it rounded a bit. The first " Audi " indicated on the rating plate in the engine compartment as the manufacturer still " Mercedes -Benz AG, Stuttgart ", since the auto Union until 1966 was a subsidiary of Daimler -Benz.

The F103 was an evolution of the DKW F102. Since the four-cylinder engine of the Audi was longer than the DKW three cylinder, the condenser was installed at an angle next to the engine in the Audi left. To the front of the car needed to be renewed consuming. Instead of the round headlights in chrome grill of the Audi F102 had a black grill with rectangular headlights.

Body

All models were offered as a saloon with two or four doors. With the exception of the Audi Super 90, the Audi F103 was available as a three-door station wagon. This was - as the combined models of Volkswagen - " Variant ".

The rear end is almost equivalent to the first of the F102, but got to the rear fender ends around cross taillights.

Engines / equipment

The F103 series is exclusively equipped with four-cylinder in-line engines. As an export model was from 1969 the Super 90 as a sedan and Variant ( " Station Wagon" ) sold only in a few copies in the United States. The Audi 75 1969 replaced both the "Audi " and the "Audi 80 ".

The F103 engines were also called " medium-pressure engines ." This label founded on the very high for its time average working pressure, which was, inter alia, achieved by a high compression ratio. Therefore, the engines required premium gasoline with octane number 98 (now Super Plus). The engine was co-developed with Daimler -Benz in the short time (1958-1964), in which the car was owned by Union / DKW Daimler -Benz; Originally it was developed at Mercedes as multi-fuel engine for military purposes, but not used. The Audi four-stroke engines had an underlying (side ) camshaft, which was driven by a duplex roller chain and pushrods and rocker arms actuated valves. Thanks to the high compression (which, however, was reduced in later versions ) was the Audi engine for its time relatively economical, but also ran something pithy.

In the first series of the larger Audi 100 (1968-1976) was the same engine with increased displacement in versions used sometimes up to 115 hp. With the first Audi 80, the newly designed EA827 engine was 1972 ( EA = " development contract " ) was introduced with an overhead camshaft, which was later also used in almost all new front-wheel drive Volkswagen models.

Like its predecessor, the DKW F102 was the Audi F103 - together with NSU Ro 80, VW K 70 and the larger Citroen car this time - the front of the gearbox " inboard " disc brakes on the drive shafts. The four-speed gearbox had a column shifter. However, the now conventional means or bunk circuit could alternatively be ordered as of 1969. A three -speed automatic was offered only in the Audi 100 from August 1970.

The front wheels were individually suspended on double wishbones, rear, there was a rigid Torsionskurbelachse, all around with torsion bar springs and telescopic shock absorbers.
