History

Barwedel was first documented in 1309 mentioned as Berewedel. The original village form was that of a Wendish the winder. According to a settlement Directory 1850 were at this time 31 farms.

Place name

Former place names of Barwedel were in the years 888 Beriuuidi, 1309 Bereweden 1495 Barwedel 1535 Barwedel, 1566 and 1609 Barweddell Barwede. From 1625 handed down today's spelling. The name is one of the place names resulting from field names and there is a compound that the place name in " beri- widi " disassembled. The dialectal pronunciation Barwee can be attributed to Middle Low German or wil altniederdeutsch Widu attributed to forest. As base word is " Widu " to be set. Darin " wil " is for " forest " suspected. " BER, bâr, over, beier, beer" means " boar ". The place name probably means " pig forest ", based on the acorn.

Bundeswehr listening post

Featured will be the place of the former reconnaissance storm of the Bundeswehr. The wireless monitoring system was used during the Cold War to intercept military radio communications in the GDR. The radio reconnaissance in Barwedel already existed since 1970, but as a mobile unit. 1976, the patient monitoring system on the highest point was widely established, the high mountain in the middle of Barwedel 120 m above sea level. NN. The facility consists of a 70 meter high tower on a two-story factory building and several outbuildings. During the operational period, the plant was strictly secured and guarded around the clock. Two identical Bundeswehr listening devices were also on surveys directly to the former NATO 's eastern border. These were plants near the GDR on the Hoher Meissner in Kassel (2002 blown up ) and close to the former Czechoslovakia on the Great Kornberg in Selb in the Fichtelgebirge.
