Geography

Geographical location

The place is located in a triangle between Hannover, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg. Until the county seat Gifhorn It is about 10 kilometers. The municipal area, east of the village Leif earth is the protected landscape livestock Moor.

Geology

The district Leif earth extends to a glacial dune formation between Aller and Okerurstromtal. For this reason, there are several small hills ( Karberg, Eggelingsberg ) and swampy peat layers.

History

Leif Earth was formed at the beginning of the 13th century. At the time passed in the vicinity of the present village several small settlements and isolated farmsteads, for example Brünsel, Bockerode, Harm constable. Over time, their inhabitants moved into the more favored position of today's Leiferder village area and gave the old settlements on, remember the street name.

Leif earth originally consisted of the farms that had settled on the glacial dunes and today Altdorf form. End of the 19th century was Leif earth two kilometers north of the village, a station on the railway line Taught - Berlin. From this point, the station settlement developed. This development was reinforced after the Second World War due to the influx of refugees from the former eastern territories. This trend continued until the 1960s. The settlement system has extended to about one square kilometer and is home to about 1,500 people.

The two districts developed separately from each other, as between them for a long time was a one kilometer wide strip of fields, meadows and fields. This led in part to an independent culture and stress fields. This behavior was provoked by the different social classes in the two districts. While the village was mainly dominated by farmers, farmer servants and self-employed artisans, lived in the Bahnhofsiedlung working families and displaced persons. In the 1970s there were severe storms in the Leiferder environment. So there was in 1970 a severe hailstorm, rained down on the fist-sized hailstones and causing severe damage.

Until 1974 was Leif earth seat of the velvet municipality, consisting of the municipalities Leif earth Dalldorf, angle, Vollbüttel and Ribbesbüttel. As part of local government reform in the place then went over to the administration area of the velvet municipality Meinersen.

In August 1975, a devastating forest fire between Leif earth and Meinersen took place. On August 10, 1975 died as five firefighters volunteer fire Faller life and Hohenhameln.

Naming

The name Leif earth is divided into words and Lieth path. Lieth denotes the gently rising ridge, on which the old center is located. The path is explained by the ability to traverse the then marshy areas of the all- or Okerurstromtals at this location.

Traffic

Leif earth is on the high-speed line Hannover- Berlin. The German train runs from Leif earth once per hour on this route for regional traffic in the direction of Hanover and Wolfsburg direction. The bus consists essentially of the bus line 111 (Braunschweig - Gifhorn, each direction every hour) and a shuttle bus, which compresses the stops in Leif earth and serves the neighboring towns Dalldorf and Volkse. The other bus consists of individual school bus traffic and traffic for the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg. The on local roads consist of two country roads and a county road. Leif earth has a primary school and, since the abolition of the orientation stage in Lower Saxony, a high-school branch of the school in Meinersen.

Attractions

St. Viti Church

When St. Viti Church to Leif earth is a neo-Gothic brick church, which was built around 1860. Parts of it, such as the tower base were assumed by the earlier church. It is with about 750 seats to a big church. So it is after the St. Nicholas Church in Gifhorn the second largest church in the county. At this prominent position occurred because many neighboring towns financially involved in the construction of the new church, because they belonged to the parish at that time Leif earth. NABU Artenschutzzentrum

The NABU Artenschutzzentrum Leif earth cares addition to its original mandate of bird care now about the reception and care of exotic animals that have been smuggled or neglected. The facility is located on the site of a former dairy and consists of aviaries and a leisure center. The special attention is paid to the stork care. So there is a nest on the former dairy chimney, which is monitored by camera. This facility was opened in 1984.

Nature reserve cattle Moor

Under the Livestock Moor is a cultivated moorland in the east of Leif earth.
