Beryozovsky, Kemerovo Oblast

Beryozovsky (Russian Берёзовский ) is a city in Kemerovo Oblast (Russia) with 47 279 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located in the northern part of the Kuzbass, about 35 km northeast of Kemerovo Oblasthauptstadt. The climate is continental.

Beryozovsky forms a separate urban district, which is surrounded by the territory of Kemerovo Rajons. Apart from the actual city and its around 5 km from the districts Kurganowka ( Кургановка ) and Oktyabrsky ( Октябрьский ) are two villages with a total of 2,231 inhabitants to the town circle. The total population of the city circle Beryozovsky thus amounts to 49 510.

Beryozovsky is located on the railway line Kemerovo - Barsas - Anzhero Sudschensk. The stations are called Saboischtschik ( Забойщик, near Kurganowka ) and Birjulinskaja ( Бирюлинская, near Oktyabrsky ).

History

Beryozovsky (of Russian берёза / berjosa for " birch " ) was established in 1949 as a mining camp for the new same coal mine. On January 11, 1965 she was united with the nearby, also caused by coal shafts settlements Kurganowka and Oktyabrsky and received city rights.

Culture, Education and sights

Since 1984, the city exists in a local museum with a focus on (military) history.

Economy

The determining industry is the coal industry with the shafts Perwomaiskaja ( Первомайская ) and Berjosowskaja ( Берёзовская ) and the mining Tschernigowez ( Черниговец, one of the largest in Russia, west of the city).

In the area there are also deposits of iron ore, gold and construction materials that are partially exploited. Forestry and wood processing play a subordinate role.
