Sheregesh

Scheregesch (Russian Шерегеш ) is an urban-type settlement in Kemerovo Oblast (Russia) with 10,173 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement is located in Mountain Shoria, about 300 km as the crow southeast of the Oblasthauptstadt Kemerovo and about 100 km southeast of Novokuznetsk, at the headwaters of the Bolshoi UNSAS ( Big UNSAS ), a tributary of the Tom Creek Mras -Su. North of the village, the treeless mountain massif Mustag rises up to 1570 m.

Scheregesch belongs to Rajon Taschtagol and is located about 20 km north-east of the administrative center Taschtagol. About eight kilometers southwest of the town center, is beyond a flat pass to the valley of Kondoma influx Schalym the same district Schalym.

History

The town was due to the discovery of iron ore deposit Scheregeschewskoje in 1931. It was named and later the place after the discoverers, the brothers Scheregeschew.

After a delay caused by the Second World War in 1949 began the construction of a mine and a working class neighborhood. The first ore was promoted in 1952, 1956 was the place the status of an urban-type settlement.

In recent years, Scheregesch has developed into an important regional alpine ski center with about 30 hotels. The season lasts from November to May

Economy and infrastructure

In Scheregesch is the iron ore mining - operated since 2004 by Evrazruda, which is since 2005 part of the Evraz Group - open pit and underground. The iron ore reserves of the deposit - mainly in the form of magnetite, with an average iron content of 35% - amount to nearly 200 million tons. Every year, up to 3 million tonnes were promoted. The mines are located south-east of Scheregesch and Schalym, the ski resorts on the north-western side of the valley.

The settlement is the terminus of an electrified railway line, which at the station Kondoma near the end point of the route Novokuznetsk - branches Taschtagol. In addition to the railhead Scheregesch there is another in Schalym. In winter, the special train Simnjaja Skaska drives ( Winter's Tale ) for winter sports weekend of Novosibirsk in the Scheregesch 600 km away.

Also towards Taschtagol Scheregesch is connected to the road network; from there, a regional road along the railway line to Novokuznetsk and in the Kuznetsk Basin.
