History

In the late 1970s it was in the executive office of the BMW motorcycle manufacturer to believe that an extension of the product range down was necessary. It was decided that a redesign was necessary to compensate for this shortcoming in the class of motorcycles with displacements of less than 800 cc. However, this should not deviate too far from the proven Urkonstruktion the BMW R 75/5. It can be assumed that one has delivered internally hard battles for the equipment and design at BMW, because at the end yes motorcycles should be, which is also priced extended the range down. On the other hand, we did not want to jeopardize his reputation as a quality manufacturer by a "cheap boxer " safe.

Then came out in 1978, two motorcycles that closely emulated the design of the predecessor in the BMW range, but it certainly showed in many ways in the future. The motorcycles of the type 248 differed among themselves only by a few technical details, the different displacements were realized by different sized cylinder bores:

First there was the BMW R 45 in two engine variants with 20 kW ( 27 hp ) and 26 kW ( 35 hp ) was offered. The weaker variant fitted to the then -effective 27 hp insurance class and was often used by driving schools.

The R 65 should close the gap that the R 60/7 left. The answer to why you ( 45 HP ) were missing five horsepower to exploit the then 50 hp insurance class with 33 kW, the then chief researcher Hans -Günther von der Marwitz remained with the words " it is sufficient " guilty.

For the model year 1981, the Type 248 was then again subjected to a facelift and technically revised. The R 65 now had the full 50 hp, the R 45 was accounted for in the stronger variant. Added to this was the R 65 LS with her rather controversial design, similar to the Suzuki Katana, whose design is also by Hans A. Muth, then head of design at BMW Motorrad.

In 1985, the end of the type 248 in the BMW range. The newly introduced emission values for motorcycles could not be met with the comparatively high density R - 65 drive in his former shape. However, he lived in the R 65 type 247E on, which was derived with their Monolever suspension of the R 80 ( it differed only engine, final drive ratio and characteristic coefficient of the speedometer ). In addition, he was also charged with 20 kW ( 27 hp ) offered in a significantly derated version with smaller carburettors and less compression - this variant replaced the R 45 Furthermore, it has been incorporated into this version also in the R 65 G / S, a small variation the grounds / Sports R 80 G / S.
