BMW GS

After considerable success in the Enduro sport motorcycle manufacturer BMW has launched with the GS series in 1980 for the first time an off road motorcycle with spacious boxer engine and swingarm on the market. The first model BMW R 80 G / S with the classic two-valve boxer engine and a Monolever swingarm followed in 1988 models, which had a Paralever swing arm and from that time even with 1000 cm ³ ( R 100 GS) were available. Later touring bikes with the more modern four-valve boxer engines and single cylinder and twin-cylinder in-line engines came on the market. The abbreviation GS was initially for " grounds / Sports ", later " terrain / road ".

Had on BMW GS motorcycles, among other things, Hubert Auriol, Gaston Rahier, Jutta Kleinschmidt and Richard Sainct considerable success in the Dakar Rally. The author Ted Simon has made his second trip around the world on a converted R 80 GS Basic at the age of 70 years. The actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman in 2004 carried out their motorcycle journey from London to Russia to New York City on BMW R 1150 GS Adventure motorcycles and 2007 from John O'Groats / Scotland over London through Africa to Cape Town on BMW R1200GS.
