Boxing at the 1904 Summer Olympics

In the III. Summer Olympic Games 1904 were held in St. Louis from September 21 to 22 for men first championship boxing matches held in seven weight classes. It took only some Americans, yet these competitions were considered olympic: They were not advertised as national championships and foreigners would have been eligible. Venue was the Physical Culture School, a gym right next to the stadium Francis Field.

Every fight went three rounds; the first two were for three minutes, the third round took four minutes. Participants in a lighter weight class were allowed to compete in higher weight classes. Oliver Kirk, winner of the bantamweight and featherweight, so that is the only boxer in history to win two gold medals at the same games.

Flyweight (up to 47.63 kg )

In this weight class only two boxers were reported, so the competition only consisted of the finals. George Finnegan won this by TKO in the first round. Although his opponents Miles Burke weighed a kilo too much, but was still allowed to even allow a fight.

Bantamweight (up to 52.16 kg )

Again, there were only two participants. George Finnegan graduated from that day his second fight, but by Oliver Kirk was by TKO defeated in the third round.

Featherweight (up to 56.70 kg )

Date: 21 and September 22, 1904

Three boxers competed at this competition. First Haller and Gilmore boxed against each other. The winner was up against Oliver Kirk on the following day. Kirk won the final battle against Haller, although he was a full five kilograms lighter, and took the only boxer ever a second gold medal.

Lightweight (up to 61.24 kg )

Since in this weight class competed eight boxer, a competition in a tournament was possible. As one of the participants in the Boxer Carroll Lewis was reported, which was quite well known in St. Louis. Under his name, however, came at a swindler named Bollinger, who was disqualified then. His opponent Peter Holdt stubbornness came to the next round, but then lost the battle for the bronze medal. Harry Spanger defeated in the final Jack Eagan on points.

Welterweight (up to 65.27 kg )

Four boxers were reported in this weight class, including the top two finishers in the welterweight division. Spanger lost in the final against Young on points. To the third place there was no fighting. Lydon took two months later participate in the Olympic football tournament and finished second.

Middleweight (up to 71.67 kg )

In single fight in this weight class ( there are only two participants were reported ) suggested Mayer Spradley his opponent in the third round by KO

Heavyweight ( over 71.67 kg )

Reported were three boxers. Middleweight Olympic gold medalist Charles Mayer joined in the final the winner of the semi-finals and lost against his ten kilos heavier competitors Samuel Berger.
