Brdo Castle near Kranj

Brdo pri Kranju ( German Egg in Kranj ) is a north-west of Ljubljana ( German: Laibach ) located small town in the Upper Carniola in the municipality of Kranj ( German: Krainburg ) with a Renaissance castle and large parks.

Location and use

Brdo is located about 10 km from Ljubljana Brnik International Airport and about 30 kilometers from Ljubljana. A new convention center in the middle of the castle park serves the Government of the Republic of Slovenia as " Protokolarobjekt " take place in the major international conferences. Thus, the building housed example, in 1996, the Alpine Conference IV. During the Slovenian EU Presidency in the first half of 2008, it was used extensively for informal EU meeting as well as for the EU - US Summit, in which, among other things, U.S. President George W. Bush met with European leaders.

In addition there are a hippodrome, a riding school, a great golf course and several fishing ponds.

Attractions and sights

The present castle Brdo was built around 1510 by the Carniolan nobleman George ( Yuri ) Egkh, the general manager of the Habsburg possessions in the Duchy of Carniola. It was originally built in the Renaissance style, but has been since often transformed. In the 18th century the family Zois acquired the lock, and until 1928 it remained in their possession. Then, there resided among others the Yugoslav royal family.

After the communist takeover in 1945 of his term of Yugoslavia, the castle was confiscated into the service of Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito as a summer residence. After Tito's death in 1980 the estate passed into the hands of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia and after the declaration of independence of Slovenia on 25 June 1991 on to this new state.
