Federal highway 188 ( Abbreviation: B 188) is one of the longer federal roads across northern Germany. It runs from west to east through the states of Lower Saxony, Saxony- Anhalt and Brandenburg and connects the B 3 B 5

Course

Lower Saxony

Federal highway 188 begins just outside the capital of Lower Saxony Hannover Burgdorf at the junction of the Federal Highway 3 Hannover- Celle. The B 188 is then past Burgdorf. Continue through Altmerdingsen as bypass, Uetze over to Kreuzkrug where the B214 Celle- Braunschweig is crossed. About two hundred meters south of the B 444 in direction begins Peine.

On one completed in 2004 bypass it goes through the local asparagus and sugar beet growing area continues past Meinersen and on scenic lines as " German tourist route Alpine Baltic Sea" by Gifhorn ( 45 km) right on Mill Museum over, where as extension of the A 391 to four lanes developed B is crossed 4 from Braunschweig to Uelzen. The route then runs a few kilometers directly along the course of the river Aller, which has formed here in the all- glacial valley delightful meander. The road passes through the south of the municipality Sass castle, and Osloß Weyhausen. Shortly before Wolfsburg crosses the road the same lateral canal and the motorway junction on the A 39 Salzgitter -Braunschweig- Wolfsburg, currently (2012 ) is the expansion end of this motorway and at the same time forms a junction with the B248 to Salzwedel.

It then goes to Wolfsburg (66 km). North of Velpke, behind Wolfsburg, the B 244 is crossed from Helmstedt to Wittingen. Northwest of Oebisfelde the road crosses the border between Lower Saxony and Saxony- Anhalt.

Saxony-Anhalt

The journey on scenic route goes through the natural park Drömling to Gardelegen (116 km). This is where the B 188 to B 71 from Uelzen and leads to the sparsely populated Colbitzer over the heathland by the Altmark; on this leg of the B 188 performs the holiday road called the " Romanesque Road". In Dahlen, the B 188 combines with the B 189 injection Walk -Magdeburg to bypass to 5.5 km, the cathedral city of Stendal (153 km) as a bypass.

With a slight arc to the south, the road leads to Tangermünde (163 km) and on the only bridge between Magdeburg and Wittenberg on the Elbe. East of Wust ( Wust - Fischbeck ) B exceeds 188, the border to Brandenburg ( 177 km).

Brandenburg

Federal highway 188 now reached the Havel, where a lock is worth seeing, and Rathenow (190 km). The B 188 ends after 24 km at Friesacker district Briesen and opens into the B 5 from Hamburg, which is located about 50 km Berlin.

History

Earlier routes and designations

The Prussian State Road No. 84b between Stendal, Tangermünde and Fischbeck was 1844-1847 to join in Stendal to the then newly built State Road 85 ( part of today's B 107) between Genthin and Havel mountain. The middle section from Stendal to Wolfsburg was built 1853-1855 as a circular highway that was built solely at the expense of the counties involved. Only after the construction of the Tangermünder Elbbrücke in 1933 this road was navigable throughout.

Reichsstrasse 188 1936-1949

In 1936 the entire route was rededicated to the National Highway 188. The aim was to better link the then still being planned city of Wolfsburg. Due to the German division after the Second World War, this road was interrupted between Oebisfelde and Velpke. The demarcation was carried out at the level of Velpker Good Büstedt, directly on the Aller.

Highway 188 1949-1990

The eastern stretch was taken up by the GDR called highway 188 in its route network. Until the closure of the border, there was a regular border crossing .. With the closing of the border, the road was mined in the immediate vicinity of the border.

The border opening was made in the F 188 / B 188 on November 26, 1989 at 6 clock. It remembered today an information board. On 1 July 1990, the border controls were recruited.

Federal Highway 188 from 1949 to 1990

The western stretch took the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 as a federal highway 188 in its route network.

After German reunification

With German reunification on 3 October 1990, the F 188 was merged with the B 188.

By 2001, the B 188 led by Tangermünde. From 1997 to 2001, a new Elbe bridge and a bypass north of the city were built.

The Lower Saxony State Agency for Road and Transport - Business Hanover - has the bypass Burgdorf built as part of the B 188 and released in October 2009 for traffic.

Another phase of construction of the ring road B 188 Rathenow was completed in September 2010; Construction began in 2004. B 188 now runs west of Rathenow at Großwudicke on the south side of the ICE Berlin- Hannover along.

On 6 December 2010 the opening of the bypass roads of Danndorf and Velpke took place east of Wolfsburg to the border with Saxony -Anhalt in the course of state road 188 At the same time the opening of the subsequent evasion of Oebisfelde in Saxony -Anhalt took place. Construction of about 10.7 kilometer road was on 23 September 2009. Much of the route runs parallel to the north side of the ICE Berlin- Hannover along. The eastern continuation along the railway line to Frankenfelde is in the planning phase.
