Chevigney- lès -Vercel is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Chevigney- lès -Vercel is located on 658 m above sea level, 3 km northeast of Valdahon and about 27 km east-southeast of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the Jura, on the western slope of a hill on the plateau of Valdahon, called the first plateau of the Jura Mountains, west of the ridge of Mont de Goux.

The area of ​​5.38 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the area is occupied by only weakly in relief plateau Valdahon, which is on average 640 m. It is partly consisted of arable and meadow land, partly by forest. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. South of the village begins a dry valley that stretches as trough-like depression to the northwest through the plateau. The northern part of the municipality (approximately 2 km ²) is part of the military training area Valdahon, which occupies an area of ​​35 km ² in total. To the southeast the land rises gradually. The municipal area extends into the forest of the Grand Bois et Viard, in the 700 meters, the highest elevation of Chevigney- lès -Vercel is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Chevigney- lès -Vercel are Vercel - Villedieu -le-Camp to the north, Adam -lès -Vercel in the east, the south and Épenoy Valdahon in the West.

The 1141 mentioned village church was under the monastery Montbenoît. In the Middle Ages Chevigney belonged to the rule Vercel and formed a fief, which was managed by the local family Belot -Villette. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. For better distinctness from other municipalities with the same name Chevigney was officially renamed Chevigney- lès -Vercel 1991. Since 1998 Chevigney- lès -Vercel is a member of the 44- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Pierre Fontaine - Vercel.

On 1 January 2009 there was a change in the membership of the district municipality. So far, belonging to the district Besançon, all municipalities in the canton came to the district Pontarlier.

The single village church of Chevigney was built from 1741 to 1749.

Population

With 122 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Chevigney- lès -Vercel is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 143 persons were still counted ), a significant population increase has been recorded since the mid-1970s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Chevigney- lès -Vercel was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village.
