Vernierfontaine

Vernierfontaine is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Vernierfontaine is located on 724 m above sea level, 6 km southwest of Valdahon and about 25 km southeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village is located in the Jura, a scenic location on a gently sloping hillside to the north on the plateau of Valdahon, called the first plateau of the Jura Mountains, northeast of the valley system of the Loue.

The area of ​​13.28 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The entire area is occupied by only weakly in relief plateau Valdahon, which is on average 700 m. It is predominantly of arable and meadow land, partly also passed by forest and rises to the southeast slightly. At the height of Vernierfontaine the highest point of the municipality is achieved with 769 m. The plateau has no above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. To the west, the municipality's area extends into the forest area of ​​the Bois de la Bouhard.

Neighboring communities of Vernierfontaine are Fallerans in the north, Étray and Nods to the east, and Chasnans Lavans- Vuillafans in the south and Voires and Guyans - Durnes in the West.

History

Is first mentioned Vernierfontaine already in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages the Church and the majority of the village to the monastery Mouthier included. Together with the Franche -Comté Vernierfontaine came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. Since 1998 Vernierfontaine is a member of the 44- villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Pierre Fontaine - Vercel.

Attractions

The church of Saint -André was erected in 1868 on the site of a previous medieval building. The bell tower was equipped with a high onion dome, measuring 63 m.
