Coat of arms of Kiribati

The coat of arms of Kiribati was adopted in 1979.

Description

In split coat of arms can be seen ( symbol of the Pacific) above a yellow frigate bird over a rising sun on a red field and including three blue wavy stripes in silver.

On the tape below the coat of arms is the motto of the state:

The same motif is - also seen on the flag of Kiribati - without motto.

Symbolism

The waves represent the Pacific Ocean. The sun symbolizes the golden future of the independent state. The frigate bird is the national bird of Kiribati.

History

On May 1, 1937, King George VI. of Great Britain the then British colony of the Gilbert and Elliceinseln ( Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony ) a coat of arms.

The banner carried on Kiribati and Tuvaluan the motto:

In 1979 the coat of arms became the official coat of arms of Kiribati with a new spell.
