Coat of arms of Vanuatu

The coat of arms of Vanuatu was adopted in 1980 with the independence.

Description

It shows a Melanesian warrior or chief with a spear in front of a volcano.

Below this is a golden banner with the state motto in Bislama:

Behind it is the state emblem, consisting of two green crossed namele leaves against the silver canine of a boar.

The state emblem is also found in the flag of Vanuatu.

Symbolism

The leaves of the native cycad species ( Cycas seemannii ) are a symbol of peace, they serve in Melanesia to identify taboo - occupied places.

The wild boar is a symbol of prosperity, pigs are in Vanuatu as a sign of wealth. This state motto is taken from the first Prime Minister of Vanuatu, the Anglican priest Walter Lini Hadye.
